hurricane ike
ike hit us on friday night and it was crazy. i'd never been through a storm that bad, at least not that i remember. and we weren't even on the bad side! before the storm hit it was amazing to see what was happening in galveston. the water was up to the seawall and the piers were starting to wash away. not to mention crazy people walking the seawall, one in a teddy bear costume, taking pictures. we're very lucky that we only lost power for 24 hours because those 24 hours were miserable. i can't imagine how those people are surviving even with a "cool" front coming in. we finally got our water back last night and i was so excited to take a shower.
our damage was similar to others around us, a few down trees, limbs, shingles, and fences. that's our fence in the neighbor's yard in the first picture and the other side of our fence in the second. but oh galveston looks bad. i'm anxious to see what the beach will look like now and how much will be left. and we've finally have been getting images of crystal beach and the west end and it just looks destroyed. luckily a lot of people got out and those that didn't seem to be okay and have learned their lesson.
Houston amazingly had their act together this time and had learned a lot from rita. the evacuation went so much smoother and traffic was only in two spots and it lasted for a few hours not days like rita. i'm sure rita is the reason why so many people didn't evacuate this time. i know my sister who was so freaked out that we needed to leave for rita was adamant that she wasn't even leaving her apartment this time. she still doesn't have power but luckily she's okay.
i've always been the skeptical person dealing with hurricanes. but now if we ever get one stronger than a three, i'm out. it takes a toll on you worrying the whole night about everyone and everything. and the aftermath is almost worse than the actual storm, especially in houston.
