mirrors
about a year ago we finished renovating the house but there was one area that never got finished. the vent above the stove was never put in because the duct(?) had holes and needed to be replaced. we also needed another outlet because our old microwave was connected to the oven so the outlet is down behind the stove. well, around that time, our handy man stopped calling and we just never bothered to do anything about it (mainly due to my fear of the attic.) so, today i saw this post on apartment therapy about a mirrored back splash. since we had the combo thing going on there was no linoleum behind the stove. we've been thinking of different ideas for the back splash; stick-on tiles, try and find the matching linoleum, or stainless steel. i didn't really like any of those and the mirror idea is the first one i've really liked. see, our house has a lot of mirrors so it's kind of an obvious choice. what's not expected is me suggesting them. my grandmother was obsessed with putting up walls of mirrors 'to open up the space.' so natch my mother adopted the same idea, resulting in three walls of full mirrors. the result of growing up in two houses filled with mirrors is two children terrified of mirrors. i've learned to live with them now and even have four mirrors in my room (though two of them are for balancing/feng shui purposes.) my sister's fear is still bad and i still can't look at them at night but, i've realized they're kind of a necessity. especially when you have unruly hair, and a fashion sense that is growing but sometimes questionable. it might be kind of weird watching yourself cook, but it's supposed to be good feng shui and the kitchen could use a little brightneing. plus we have some left over mirror from the last wall that was put up so it'd be free. if we end up doing it (and putting the vent up ourselves) i'll report back.
